Layers, Masks and Selections
Tthe Layers Palette.
Open a new image 500 x 500, transparent background, 16 million colors. Use the Preset Shapes Tool, Ellipse shape, uncheck retain style and vector style, put foreground color to none and background color to red, and draw a red vector circle.
In the layer palette click the New Raster Layer Icon (or right click and choose new Raster Layer from the context menu.)

Now on this new layer choose another shape (star in my case), set background color to blue and drag out the new form. Then add another raster layer, and repeat all with a new shape and another color.
One more raster layer and fill it with a gradient - settings like shown in the picture here:
You can give every layer its own name by rightclick
and in the context menu choose rename.
You have now so many possibilities to play...you can group layers and change blend modes for the layers itself or for the group...you can add adjustment layers from the contect menu (rightclick) and play again...just try out till you have the result you want to get.
